‘Fraud must be investigated’

Desirée van der Walt, MP and DA’s constituency head in the Waterberg, writes:

Jeremiah Ngobeni, mayor of Bela-Bela, allegedly signed a letter on Tuesday 5 September 2017 with his own letterhead to the MEC of CoGHSTA in Limpopo to purchase 240,9 ha of agricultural land for human settlement purposes.

The purchase price for the remainder of the Farm Roodekuil No 496-KR along the R516-road to Settlers is on the offer of land or property to the Housing Development Agency for R80 million.

This is R73 million more than the municipal valuation of R7 million.

Yet, at several community meetings the public was informed that the Bela-Bela municipality is not short of any land for housing purposes, since the current available land for this purpose is sufficient for the next 20-25 years.

I have raised this matter in parliament and have requested the public protector’s office to investigate the matter. If need be, we will also get the Hawks or Special Investigative Unit involved in this matter.

Too many big land deals by the ANC in Bela-Bela meant for housing are approved whilst the poor com-munities must live in inhumane conditions. All of this needs to be investigated.

The mayor publicly announced that it was not his signature and announced that an investigation will be launched to determine who signed this application in his name.

Well, 240 days have lapsed since, and according to the municipality, no inves-tigation has been launched.

Neither was any case opened with the police.

Mayor, all instances of fraud must be investigated. If you and your ANC colleagues want to hide such, the DA will not.
